When American Idol came on the scene the most famous person on the judges panel was Paula Abdul. Idol premiered in 2002, Abdul’s last hit (only in clubs) was in 1995. Behind the scenes hit maker Randy Jackson and an at the time un-known British music exec Simon Cowell rounded out the judges table.
American Idol was a smash hit, dominating in ratings and creating pop stars (kinda). Fast forward to 2012 where you have three singing competition shows, Idol, X-Factor, and The Voice. But now a days it’s not the talent or the music driving these ratings, it’s the judges.
The Voice just announced next season Usher (still a mega star) and Shakira will be replacing Cee-Lo Green, and Christina Aguilera.
These three shows which showcase undiscovered talent right? Seem to be competing on who can get the biggest stars to be judges.
When will they stop? Who can top who? You used to have former pop stars (See Paula Abdul) and un-known producers and execs. Now you have current stars (Usher, Nicki Minaj, Adam Levine, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears….the list can go on).
These shows are not about the music anymore, and that is the sad part. The drama isn’t in what singer topped the other, it’s “OMG did you see what Adam said to Christina?” or “Simon is soooo pissed at Britney Spears.” These shows are about the judges.
The interesting thing to see is how many of these shows will be on in the next 2 years.
It’s been over 2 years since I posted last here. To be honest I don’t even know if I will keep this name “thedailyhit”. You see I started this blog as a resume’ in a way. I wanted to people see my passion for music. I also wanted to let people know that there WAS music I liked and wanted to share with them even though the station I was working at may not be playing it yet.
I have moved twice since my last post. I now live in Jacksonville Fla. My Wife loves it, my daughter loves it, and I love it. I work for a company that I love, and plan to be with for many years to come.
I have grown since my last post, and I think it may show in this blog. I read a friends blog today which inspired me to post this. I may just not post about music, I may post about anything I feel I need to get out…..that’s what a blog is right?
So let me introduce myself again….Hello my name is Kobe, I work in radio and I am amazed I remember this password.
2010 Taio Cruz was the most successful import from England to cross to the US with success. Tinie Tempah may do the same in 2011. He has won numerous awards, and his record label plans to cross him to US radio very soon! This song has a strong hook, and the verses sound like nothing else on the radio. “Written In The Stars” Tinie Tempah ft. Eric Turner, remember it!
Love this song from Dev, the same girl who sang the hook on Far East Movement’s “Fly Like a G6”. I hope this is one of the big hits in early 2011.
Sean Kingston & Justin Bieber “Eenie Meenie”.
Glad to see Sean Kingston have another hit again, since the debacle with “Replay” by Iyaz, and “Whatcha Say” by Jason Derulo. To update you on the story, basicly those 2 songs which were both HUGE hits were offered first to Sean. His management said “No thanks”, and now Iyaz, and Jason Derulo are almost household names.
So Sean Kingston called in “the closer” or “Mr. Automatic” aka Justin Bieber. No one is hotter right now in the music world. This is a good song even if Bieber wasn’t on it, him singing in it makes it that much better. I expect this to be a summer anthem.
Usher ft. Nikki Minaj “Little Freak”
Simple equation, get a hot female rapper, have her rap about fooling around with other hot females= HIT.
Trey Songz Ft. Fabolous “Say Ahh”
I am a little late for this one, since I have’nt been blogging often. But “Say Ahh” is going to be a smash at Pop radio. This is a club banger, plus it sounds great in your car, or in the house while you’re doing whatever. This may be Trey’s first big hit at pop.
